Italian in the No-Man's Land Between Stress-Timing and Syllable-Timing? Speakers are More Stress-Timed than Listeners
نویسندگان
چکیده
How syllable-timed is Italian? We investigate two contexts for vowel reduction, unstressed syllables and syllables in polysyllabic words. In a production experiment, a large sample of speakers from Tuscany read diand trisyllabic target words with different stress placement in a sentence context. Results showed vowel reduction in unstressed syllables, both in terms of duration and spectral quality as well as polysyllabic shortening (without spectral reduction). These temporal adjustments are of similar magnitude as reported for stresstimed languages. Results of a two-alternative forced choice task, however, showed little sensitivity to temporal patterns in monosyllabic fragments. Hence, production patterns appear to be more stress-timed than perceptual mechanisms which has implications for duration models in speech synthesis.

Rhythm and convergence between speakers of American and Indian English
The study examines rhythmic convergence between speakers of American and Indian English. Previous research has shown that American English shows tendencies towards stress-timing, and Indian English has been claimed to be syllable-timed (Crystal 1994). Starting from the view that languages differ in their rhythmic tendencies, rather than that they have categorically different rhythmic properties...
متن کاملRhythmic analysis and quantitative measures: the essence of rhythm as temporal patterning
A comparison of Standard Italian and Southern Italian dialects is carried out using acoustic measures related to structural properties: Vowel-interval and consonantal inter-vowel-interval durations are used to obtain rhythmic measures based on a number of approach. Italian is usually considered to be ‘syllable-timed’. The structural features found in the dialects offer support for a divergence ...
متن کاملWord segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour
Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...
متن کاملKorean speech rhythm using rhythmic measures
This paper investigates speech rhythm in standard Seoul Korean using recently developed durational rhythmic measures. Traditionally, languages are classified into 'stress-timed' and 'syllable-timed' (Abercrombie, 1967), with English and German being typical stress-timed languages, French and Italian typical syllable-timed languages. Later works suggested a third category of mora-timed languages...
متن کاملListeners feel the beat: Entrainment to English and French speech rhythms
Can listeners entrain to speech rhythms? Monolingual speakers of English and French and balanced English-French bilinguals tapped along with the beat they perceived in sentences spoken in a stress-timed language, English, and a syllable-timed language, French. All groups of participants tapped more regularly to English than to French utterances. Tapping performance was also influenced by the pa...
